Account Director

Job purpose

As a senior member of the consultancy team, the purpose of this job is to provide political, industry and strategic expertise and to lead on a number of accounts ensuring consistently high-quality work for clients and to drive new business growth and client retention.

Key accountabilities


• Provide strategic communications consultancy services to a portfolio of assigned clients
• Actively manage and develop the overall client relationship and ensure that the client journey is fully embedded and embraced by all client teams at all stages.
• Take responsibility for quality control of all consultancy provided by assigned client teams
• Own and manage the account planning process including budget, allocation, resourcing and recovery of billable hours
• Utilise GK strategic advisers and GK leadership as appropriate to support client activity

New business
• Seek out new business opportunities with both new and existing clients to generate fee income and coach direct reports in developing their skills in this area
• Participate in new business proposals and pitches for new clients with direction from the leadership team
• Develop content and GK credentials and capabilities to develop agreed priority areas for business development
• Preparation of proposal documents for sign off by a Director as per company procedure
• Attend at least 4 meetings, 2 events and write 1 blog per month to support new business activity
• Participate in GK senior team meetings providing insight, ideas and advice as appropriate.

GK responsibilities

• Provide input into relevant business planning activities where appropriate
• Support in the delivery of projects linked to the strategic commercial and operating plans as directed by the Directors
• Ensure that the operating objectives and standards of performance are not only understood but also owned by their direct reports
• Support in the implementation of company policy and procedure, ensuring all direct reports are aware and understand any changes
• Support the leadership team in representing the company to major clients and professional associations
• Develop, motivate and maintain effective teams, liaising with the People and Culture Manager and other senior managers for any support required
• Uphold and demonstrate the GK values
• Ensure that client teams and staff throughout the organisation are compliant with APPC, ORCL and any other codes of practice as required
• Responsible for GK-wide support, including training, Toggl management, and resource planning
• Act as line managers to assigned account managers
• Ensure that Toggl is completed and accurate at the end of each week and that Toggl is accurate and up to date fo your accounts
• Ensure holiday handovers are drafted in adequate time
• Keep Salesforce up to date on a weekly basis


• You are able to identify and understand a client’s overall business or organisational objectives and related risks and opportunities and you can identify the best strategic communications approach and set of solutions to address these objectives
• You are able to negotiate and sell all GK services to new and existing clients
• You are confident in pitching and presenting GK services and can demonstrate success in doing so
• You can easily and successfully adapt to changing internal and external circumstances
• You can identify and address areas for staff development constructively and professionally
• You can assess and measure your contribution to GK’s success and know your value
• Your deliver written work to a consistently high standard, client-ready, demonstrates analysis, intelligence and strategic thinking
• You are able to operate comfortably at CEO and board level with clients
• You can successfully oversee, lead and manage more than 3 client accounts
• You can demonstrate a high level of productivity in your own work and on your accounts
• You are involved, at corporate level, on specific projects to improve GK’s profile and profitability
• You can devise and implement a strategic communications plan, demonstrating forward planning and strategic overview
• You have successfully managed and delivered a client project from conception through to completion
• Your contribution to staff development and growth can be evidenced via successful line management and other support
• Your leadership competencies add value to the company’s development and team work
• Your have a clear understanding of the income you are responsible for and are able to project future income and any issues
• You have secured client growth by cross-selling other GK services
